I suspect much of the difficulty lies in the French attitude that French culture is simply superior to every single culture on earth. Remember when the French were fussing about incorporating English words into French? There was a huge fuss about the risk to their culture from these alien features. Meanwhile they were importing North African aliens expecting them to speak and act purely French. The incursion of English words was just the tip of the iceberg.
