Before everyone complains that OIL is OT, my view is that the energy used by PCs is probably one of the major contributors to the "needless" burning of energy !
( something I've been ranting on about - AMD's energy-efficiency advantage )

Assumption #1 : 600 mio. PCs and Servers in use world wide
Assumption #2 : 1,000 mio. CPUs in use world wide
Assumption #3 : 100 Watt difference between using "current" AMD and Intel CPUs
Assumption #4 : the mix of private/commercial(24/7) usage ca. 10 hours/day

( Assumption #3 includes the extra power-consumption for cooling etc. )

An "oversimplified" example of what the above assumptions might mean :

100 Watt x 10 hours x 365 days x 0.16 Euros/Kilowatt x 1,000 Mio. CPUs == 58,400,000,000 Euros Worldwide.
58 Billion Euros !

And this is just the "difference between using a more efficient CPU" !
Multiply that number by 3 at least for the total system power-usage == 174 Billion Euros worldwide !!

here is the link to the PDF file if you'd like to read it.
It's well layed out with conclusions at the end.
