terrific ideas. like the suv.. you get the colored gas because of more people... pay less. Saturn pays a penalty only one person in car.

one mile fat tax... no stopping for donuts, mac burgers on way to work. coffee black only.

back to 55 mile ph not 75.. look at all the tickets and money the states will get again .

all heating thermostats should be remote control from power facility via wireless like the meter readings.

no more gas lawn mowers back to push mowers. snow shovels vs snow throwers.

re: My Landcruiser, evil SUV that it is, only gets half the gas mileage of my Saturn. But it carries twice the people. So shouldn't the two cars be taxes equally?

No, when you replace the Landcruiser you will have an incentive to look for the maximum efficiency for the people you need to carry.

The rest of your post is a straw man.

By the way, you replace the Saturn (depending on the mileage) and the Landcruiser at the same time and you break even on the tax/credit.

Funny how everyone argues against the tax but nobody against the credit. I guess it's not just an argument about manipulation in the marketplace.

That's why I think it's better to tax gas. If you ever actually carry any passengers, then you'll be benefitting from the larger vehicle and won't mind paying the tax.

But if it's just you cruising into work on the expressway, you'll probably start thinking seriously about something that uses less gas.
