Absolutely correct!

(Still... freedom is a moving target, ever to be improved upon.)

And, several developments in the West helped freedom to ultimately flower... and Theocracy and religious repression to be rejected. The Black Plague --- by killing maybe a third of the peasants --- helped to reduce the absolute power of the elites, the Church and the Nobles, over the common man, because it increased the value of his work. The Reformation (and the wars fought around it) helped to brake religious bigotry and repression... and the Enlightenment birthed our modern freedoms.
