"Retail Sales" is exclusive of Dell.com, HP.com, and the entire online ecommerce sites, etc. so the article is great spin.

Of course retail sales doesn't even cover close to the whole market. And the fact that Dell sells through their website means Intel's position in the whole market is likely to be (and currently is) higher than their position in the retail market.

It would be foolish to take the fact that AMD passed Intel in retail desktop sales to mean that AMD passed Intel in total sales, or even remotely close to it. However its not all a bunch of spin. It is a sign of progress by AMD.
