It really depends on how much pain there is to be doled out. If there are truly wide-scale mortgage defaults then lots of people will get hurt. There are companies that also insure mortgages. They will probably be the first to get hurt. This time around though, the banks have spread the wealth (or pain) unless they're keeping bad stuff on the books and not disclosing, i.e. special purpose entities.
