I think of it as the "Sippowitz treatment."

More Detective Sippowitz, less "pretty please with sugar on top" would be a nice change.

We painted ourselves into this corner after WWII. We were too idealistic and hoped we could prevent the kind of horror like WWI and II ever again, and hoped the new order would be a sort of international utopia. We never anticipated this sort of war.

The international treaties on torture make it non-derogable. There are no excuses for necessity. Now the treaties are being interpreted to outlaw anything short of offering the prisoner cookies. It's untenable, IMO.
