re: If the government just got out of the way we'd get away from our dependency on crude a lot quicker. All the price caps did was create shortages, a decline in exploration that didn't fit the market, and the creation of criminals that stole hundreds of millions of dollars.

I read in the WSJ this morning that it looks like SUV sales are on the rise again as gas prices have declined from the Katrina high. The marketplace just isn't doing it wrt gasoline... to really alter behaviour we would need consistent $3 - $4 a gallon, which would probably result in a serious recession.

We have sin taxes on cigarettes and alcohol. Why not incentives/taxes on gasoline efficiency? It's such an easy problem to solve, and there are so many benefits.
