>That's what I was taught too. But taking an expansive view, what is the essence of Judaism? Isn't it monotheism? So then, when did monotheism begin? By some counts, as much as 10,000 years ago.

There's also evidence in the Old Testament that Jews originally worshipped more than one god...

what is the essence of Judaism? Isn't it monotheism? So then, when did monotheism begin?

I was taught that the Jewish religion began with a special compact between Abraham and his god (It wasn't even monotheism, that's why god was jealous of other gods). The Jews did not deny that there were other gods, only that they were chosen to have a special relationship with a particular god.

If you want to take bible stories and monotheism then you would have to go back to Adam and Eve. They certainly would have belived in monotheism since they had a more complete picture of what was going on than anyone else. That would mean everyone is of Jewish ancestory.

There is an additional wrinkle that many of the Northern European Jews might be the decendants of the Kuzars, pushed into Europe by Genghis Khan. If so their ancestors would have never lived in the middle east.
