And you told me it was obsolete, uw!! <:-)

We have a changing battlefield environment.

The M-14 was developed for conventional European warfare (combat in cities). It was lousy in the jungle. It jammed in the wet muddy environment.

The modified M-16 (with forward assist asssembly) was excellent in the jungle...but has problems in the desert dust and sand. I understand that has been cured with a modification to the lubrication used in cleaning. Units have also been directed to clean their weapons daily...Those that do experience little difficulty.

Little of the fighting is now in the desert. We are in a MOUT phase. (military operations in urban terrain...or as was previously known...combat in cities)
In MOUT, everyone wants a gun that penetrates exterior walls and goes through vehicles.

The M-14 7.62 rifle does that better than the .223 M-16.

But, the 7.62 is also the M-60 MG round. SF has given that up because they judged it doesn't have sufficient penetration for this phase. SF is mounting a modified short barrel 50 MG on their vehicles.

You can't give a 50 to every troop...it takes three men to carry a 50 MG. So you move them up to the M-14 7.62 round.

They won't be happy with that either.
You can stand back with a 50 and take a house or a vehicle apart. The troops will never be able to do that with an M-14.

There is no perfect weapon that works best in every environment. A teams have access to a wide array of weapons. They pick and choose according to the mission and likely targets. Infantry units do not have those options.
