This is a very interesting book on the topic ("so far science points TO mind, not away from it IMHO"):

amazon.com

And after reading more reviews of Dennett... I'm not so sure he wouldn't be a great read or that he's a 'reductionist' after all!! Check this out:

""Although this book doesn't introduce anything radically new for those who follow Dennett, it does clarify his previous ideas on consciousness, free will, and human nature, and this
is far from a trivial matter. For anyone seriously interested in the question of how human free will can possibly be compatible with physical laws of cause and effect, and thought that nothing else could be reasonably said on the matter, this book is an essential. It will indeed help you clarify your thoughts, which is afterall one of the best things a work of philosophy can do for you, and one all too rarely accomplished by most philosophers.""

LOL, going to read more.

Love the example of those humans on Easter Island , that devoted all their energies competing to building those enormous statues (protector gods) , only in the end ravishing the resources of the island home by such excessive activity , and the civil conflicts led to their ultimate demise .

Intelligent design ? Would say that the idea of resource/energy management does always come into play no matter where man settles , no religion or science can claim to knowing anything "true" that does not embrace conservation of energy and embrace this fundamental rule for self preservation among self replicating superstitious carbon units .

The allegory is striking , makes you glad there's always the "afterlife " for us priviledged faithful , globalization on the move , the golden rule more than ever "in play".

in an expanding universe , and shrinking planet it is the ultimate "religion".
