"It amazes me the disparity of median prices throughout the country. In SFO, its $700k while in Syracuse, NY, its only 99k."

As of 2000, the median house price here was $79k. It might be as high as $85k now.

You are so close to Houston and Austin, you would think it would be higher. Such a low median really can be a problem for people in your area who want to move. They are limited to mostly the metro areas in the Midwest. And its a big problem for employers on either coast. If they want someone special from your area, they have to pay huge housing bucks to make it happen. Meanwhile, once again, there are people in CA who are cashing in and moving to metro areas in the Midwest. However, that never becomes a huge enough trend to reverse the population losses in the Midwest.

If you look at the history of housing in the US, there has never been this huge a disparity between areas. I am curious to see how it will resolve itself.....if it ever will. It may end up slowing the transient nature of Americans. I am not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.
