Expect to be ill for 2 days, at the start of your trip.

I'm only going for 7 days! I'll confine myself to bottled beer...

Be very careful where you eat. Make sure you chase the porter that takes your luggage, otherwise it may disappear forever... you're better off renting a car (they all come with a driver) but it can take one hour to go 8 miles, so simply hiring a rickshaw is probably a lot better. Don't take a taxi that's not directly associated with a brandname hotel because one out of 200 taxi rides will end up in being kidnapped for a bit (usually harmless where they just take your stuff and dump you in the middle of nowhere, but you don't want to risk it so be careful which taxis you take.) Bring a rag to cover your nose - the smell won't kill you, but it may feel like it will. India is not China - the poverty will be in your face, not hidden from the business section.

Sheesh! You're not making this sound very fun, and I think you're exaggerating a tad.

I've been to Bombay for two days. If Delhi and Calcutta are comparable to Bombay you are way over-exaggerating.
