The Japanese firms have fewer pension obligations and more flexible workforces—and they are largely non-union.

Don't know if its a fair comparison. Japanese auto firms in Japan are highly unionized. I would imagine American firms that have significant operations in Japan (Morgan Stanley, BofA, etc.) also have significant labor cost benefits over their direct Japanese competitors (Nomura, Bank of Tokyo, etc) just by virtue of being more recent entrants.
