That's not really true. I'm aware of very many of the tribes of American indians, and have met more than a few representatives of them personally. But I live in the west and travel in it extensively, often through or near their reservations, sometimes camping on them. I even know where some of them lived before we penned them in on their reservations. I'm sure many Americans know at least the names of some of the tribes they've seen in movies. I'm even aware of some of the castes and religions of Indian Indians, but I don't have nearly as much knowledge of them, never having been there.

Blame Columbus for the name problems! The dumb Italian thought he'd found India! I've always wondered how the Indian Indians felt about the American Indians being given their name. When Indian Indians meet an American indian, do they scrutinize them carefully, looking for similarities?
