John, "insane" is often used to denigrate the ideas of others who disagree. King George II is similarly insane. He has spooks speaking directly to him, telling him to do their supernatural works. He prays and the voices in his head tell him what to do. Maybe he really means he "thinks", but saying he "prays" sounds as though it would sell better in the rabidly superstitious USA. I doubt that she was insane in the clinical sense. I guess she was going along with her husband and if her brother was killed by the COW, then it's not surprising she opposes them and does something about it, especially if it was an unreasonable killing such as torture or trigger-happy "collateral damage".
