Talking about Indian film masterworks it obviously is difficult to pull out just one of utmost importance and influence up to our days and on western film making as well.

But my choice would be "Pyassa" by Guru Dutt.
An absolute "Must See" for any film buff.
Just the photo mastery, setting light... and all of that long before Bergman and Nyquist.

A captivating movie by all means. Tragic like Guru Dutt's own life as well.

You mention Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman to your Indian friends and they buy you the dinner on the spot!
She was a beautie, you bet.
