You really don't get it... It is treasury that prints the money... Not the Fed. The fed just trys to control inflation/deflation. Who ever told you that a non-federal agency (the federal reserve is a private corporation) could control the money supply? Was it Greenspan that was printing all the M3 liquidity over the past 4 years??

Give us all a break and go back under your rock.

"the Fed controls the money supply."

Are you new to the planet? Been on a long Safari or something?

Under Volker the money supply was tightly controlled. Greenspan prefers fiscal policy* to monetary policy*. It appears that Bernake prefers fiscal policy as well.

Volker used fiscal policy and Greenspan used monetary policy, but neither were the favored tool of the respective Chairmen.

*Fiscal Policy - controlling interest rates.
*Monetary Policy - controlling money supply.

For example the Fed adds liquidity by selling bonds.
