We are getting there. There is some promising work on regenerating sodium borohydride from sodium borate. Once we can do that efficiently, there is nothing stopping us from moving to a hydrogen economy. There is also this

While it does use coal, it does so in such a way that reduces the damage. So there still are the mining problems, but at least the emission problems are solved. It also would make the use of oil shale practical. And that would tide us over until we can develop something better.
