How about if we just make the inheritance tax 100%? Then we wouldn't end up with guys like the Chrysler scion OR Paris Hilton, and all American citizens would start from the same basis, that being 0. Micheal Dell made his own bucks.

In Miss Hilton's case, she might eke out a living as a skinny prostitute, but at least she'd be WORKING.

The problem with trying to go after the "idle rich" is that you'll also end up going after those who actually deserve some if not most of the riches they earned.

Not true. For example, in general deserved and earned riches will be reported on annual income tax statements. In genearl undeserved and/or unearned riches will magically appear following the death of a parent. It's not that hard to distinguish the two. It will be tough to collectively agree what constituted "undeserved and unearned" wealth, but you don't have to just lump all the rich together in one group.

You might say, "So what? They're rich, they can afford it. Even the hard-working ones." But then you're no longer just going after the "idle rich" anymore, but all the rich. And it no longer becomes a question of whether they deserve their riches, but a question of whether we should just soak 'em because their rich.

That's right. I want to go after all the rich. The M. Dells or the B. Gates are the aberration. Most rich did nothing to gain their wealth other than to be born into the right family. That does not make them a sacred cow in my book. Why does it in your book?
