We should get rid of government-acknowledged marriages. Everybody who wants the governmental benefits of coupling, gay or straight, should get a civil union from the state. Let marriage be strictly a church thing.

Sounds fine to me. A civil union is a government acknowledged contract between two people and all the legal ramifications (divorce, alimony, tax changes, inheritance, etc.) and a church marriage is a declaration of union before God (whichever one) and all the religious implications (uhmmm, no one else should covet your wife?) that follow, with no legal ramifications.

In the above distinction, do most people still oppose gay civil unions? I really don't know.
