Katherine Harris and GW are fighting about who is having a more disastrous year. "Today's Talking Points A quick roundup of a few interesting items: According to Insight magazine, President Bush "feels betrayed by several of his most senior aides and advisors and has severely restricted access to the Oval Office... Bush has also reduced contact with his father." Republicans Hurting in Tennessee "President Bush's approval rating has fallen considerably in Tennessee," and Sen. Bill Frist (R-TN) "wouldn't necessarily be a shoo-in to win the state as the Republican presidential nominee," according to a Middle Tennessee State University poll. Poll director Ken Blake says "the results show that Tennesseans aren't the mavericks of public opinion that they sometimes think they are." Harris Campaign Manager Quits Hotline On Call reports the campaign manager for Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL) quit today. Jim Dornan released a statement: "As often happens in campaigns, there was a difference of opinion as to what direction the campaign should be taking. Congresswoman Harris feels that in this period of national crisis, her first obligation is to her constituents in the 13th District, to fully fulfill her term, and to serve them everyday in Congress. I felt it was imperative that Katherine devote more time and energy to her campaign. This inevitably led to conflicts over time, scheduling and strategy." As Chuck Todd notes, "No wonder state House Speaker Allan Bense is being courted again." Quote of the Day "It's kind of like virginity. It is hard to get back." -- Pollster John Zogby, quoted by the Houston Chronicle, on President Bush regaining the public trust. Clinton, Spitzer Hold Huge Leads New York Attorney General Elliot Spitzer (D) and Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) continue to hold large leads over their Republican challengers, according to a Siena College survey. In the gubernatorial race against former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld (R), Spitzer is ahead 64% to 16%, and against Tom Golisano (R), he leads 58% to 26%. Clinton leads Jeanine Pirro (R), 59% to 31%, and former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer (R), 59% to 27%. Nelson Extends Lead Over Harris Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) begins his reelection year with a 55% to 31% lead over Rep. Katherine Harris (R-FL), the only announced Republican challenger in the 2006 Florida U.S. Senate race, according to a new Quinnipiac poll. Though many national Republicans tried to push Harris from the race, Florida Republicans say 46% to 29% that they would prefer Harris over Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL) as their Senate candidate. Nelson holds an even bigger lead over Foley, 55% to 27%. McCain Dines with Beatty Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) "was seen recently dining with Warren Beatty in Beverly Hills, according to one Hollywood source," the Los Angeles Times reports. "The actor, who played an activist role opposing Schwarzenegger's initiatives in last week's special election, is coy about whether he'll support longtime friend McCain for president, noting that he is also close with Gore and Clinton." Meanwhile, The Fix uses this week's Newsweek cover story to note "no potential 2008 candidate enjoys a relationship with the news media anywhere close to the one that Arizona Sen. John McCain (R) has. Dating back to his 2000 'Straight Talk' campaign, it seems like much of the press is advancing the idea that McCain is the last honest man in government."politicalwire.com
