It was important to make sure Saddam was disarmed.
Saddam was a possible danger and a huge pain in the butt, just not worth invading and occupying for. At the time Bush-Cheney were putting out all those mushroom cloud tall tales none of us knew for sure if they were telling the truth. The democrats in congress did not know either.

So while it's true that any congressman, including GOP ones, who believed Bush-Cheney were suckered, it was not their fault. You can't blame the victims of lies, only the liars themselves. Also, anti-war senators may have been right in this case, but they are not always right. And middle America will not elect an anti-war candidate president.

Also, if Bush-Cheney had prepared properly for the post-invasion like Clinton-Clark did in Yugoslavia or Bush Sr. did in Kuwait none of this would be an issue. The fact Bush-Cheney failed so miserably to anticipate the problems is the real kicker. But the lies just make it even more of a crime.
