More on Google Base

05:01 GOOG Google expands search options - WSJ (392.80 )

The Wall Street Journal reports the co today plans to begin offering a service called Google Base that will accept a wide range of content from businesses and consumers that others will be able to search. The Base service aims to make it easy for people to distribute content, from recipes to job listings, whether or not they have their own Web sites. It is also designed to improve the quality of search results, by letting the creator specify categories and other labels to describe the content. Such descriptive labels, which other companies often call "tags," in theory can improve search results Google can provide. GOOG had confirmed the existence of Base last month after images of the service leaked out, but declined to provide any specifics. At the time, some analysts and investors speculated that Base might compete with online auctioneer eBay (EBAY) and online listing services such as Craigslist Inc., in which eBay holds a minority stake. The free service includes categories for "wanted" ads, jobs, vehicles, services and products, and labels that allow individuals to specify payment methods they would accept. That lends credence to the idea that Google anticipates Base will include classified-like listings. But the co said it isn't trying to compete with eBay, Craigslist, or newspapers, which generate revenue from classified ads.
