And to keep the Iranians guessing. If they knew how weak he'd become as the result of sanctions and oil revenue losses, they might have attacked him. The one thing that probably kept the war with Iran from re-igniting was the spectre of potential WMD. Saddam knew that...and so did our intelligence.

You ignore the thousands of UN resolution violations shown. Some people will say anything about him, including that he was a great man who wouldn't harm a fly. No, doesn't make sense. His anti-American talk was LEADING his people in their opinions, while ultimately impressing them or not. He certainly needed to go.
