The French do appear to be more discerning but they also have a very nice climate, very conducive to growing fruit. American climate is much harsher, hotter in the summer, colder in the winter.

So much depends on climate. Here in Virginia, we grow apples very well. It's even possible to find the old fashioned apples if you are diligent.

In Louisiana, they cannot grow apples but they can grow very nice strawberries.

In Georgia, peaches.

In Florida, oranges.

In Michigan, sour cherries.

In Oregon, sweet cherries and berries.

If you try to grow things in the wrong climate, you won't be happy.
