"24"is a neatly packaged TV show. In the real world, the guys who want to thump information out of bad guys want to do it far in advance, whenever and wherever they think they might be on to something that could possibly eventually maybe end up as a plot on "24". They will tell you it's absolutely necessary and justifiable because it's just the same as sweating a guy two hours before the bomb goes off. They will tell you that it's no different morally because not sweating the guy MIGHT end up in the bomb going off. It's a long slippery slope that leads to thugs in basements beating the crap out of people day in and day out. I know your argument doesn't cover that, but I try to deal in the real world we live in over the singular hypothetical that might work in an abstract case.
