"The issues that polarize US society usually are... great subjects"

Well written. I suspect the subject of the Democrat party and their media allies trying to mold public opinion against President Bush and against the liberation of oppressed peoples will be discussed in academic circles for a couple generations.

"Even a blind man can see there's plenty of politics going on by the democrats and that the democratic party has the most to gain if we fail in Iraq. I'm sure the, "I told you so", angle would be used to the Nth degree during the next election."

You are correct that a successful Iraq will not make the Democrat party irrelevant. It will cause a certain amount of displeasure towards the party from those who can remember the games they played. The formerly MSM assume they can shape what people remember. The new media is making that more difficult.

"How do we empower the majority of Iraqis with the serf type mentality while keeping in check those that would be the next tyrant?"

We do not. Like it or not, the Iraqis are now their own bosses. Their future is in the hands of those very people. Many mistakes will be made. We hope and pray that as many correct choices are made as mistakes. Perhaps the good choices will overshadow the mistakes in the reflection of history.

"It is impossible to know yet, what the timeframe for Iraqi self determination is likely to be. A free Iraq can be a gleaming beacon of light for the region."

"That this will be a slow process I don't think anyone in their right mind could argue against. 5000 years of slavery is a large roadblock to progress. Part of implementing permanent change would be reforming the school system. That's something we've been putting effort into. IMO we will only find out if we truly won the war far in the distance I'd guess about 30 years."

It has only been a couple thousand years of civilized servitude. The first seeds of civilization sprung from the bountiful bread basket between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The oldest discovered writings date from this time and place. Little is know of this time. If my memory serves me most recorded history from this time reflects commerce.

Remember that despite what happened to your parents, you have the will power to be different. We should be optimistic that the shackles that appear to bind them may be thrown off in a single generation.

Iraq may be a horribly failed experiment in muslim freedom, or it may become the shining beacon of freedom in the Middle East. Just as our parents stayed with us to teach us to walk and to speak, we should stay with the nascent government and help them overcome some of the pitfalls that have caused problems for America and other democratically ruled free nations.
