News of the day"

"Bush Approval Hits 34%

President Bush's job approval continues to fall, "touching another new low for his presidency," according to the latest Harris Interactive poll. "Bush's current job approval rating stands at 34%, compared with a positive rating of 88% soon after 9/11, 50% at this time last year, and 40% in August."

"Vice President Dick Cheney's approval ratings slipped to 30% this month from 35% in August."

However, Democrats also saw "one of the biggest dips in approval" in this poll. "Only a quarter of Americans polled give Democrats a positive rating in the latest poll, compared with 31% in August, while Republicans' approval ratings fell to 27% from 32%."

Florida Governor Up for Grabs

On the heels of yesterday's report that Democrats are gaining strength in Florida, a new Rasmussen Reports poll shows a very tight race for governor. Jim Davis (D) is tied with Tom Gallagher (R) in a hypothetical match-up with each drawing 40% of the vote.

When Davis is matched against Charley Crist (R), he leads 41% to 38%.

Scandal Shadows Weld's Candidacy

In the days since former Massachusetts Gov. William Weld (R) left Decker College "to focus on a race for governor of New York, the commercial trade school has been raided by federal agents, declared bankruptcy and left hundreds of students marooned without classes," the New York Times reports. Weld was CEO of the college.

"Several top Republican strategists and allies of Mr. Weld's said they did not know enough about what happened at Decker to say whether it would affect a campaign for the Republican nomination for governor."

DeWine is in Trouble

Add Sen. Mike DeWine (R-OH) to the list of troubled incumbent Senators. A new Rasmussen Reports poll finds DeWine trailing challenger Paul Hackett (D) by a single point, 42% to 41%. Five percent (5%) say they'd vote for someone else while 12% are undecided.

For some reason the poll didn't include Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), who is also running for the Democratic nomination to take on DeWine.

Meanwhile, Ohio Gov. Bob Taft (R) "is not helping DeWine's cause. His Job Approval Rating is amazingly low at 19%. Seventy-nine percent (79%) disapprove, including 52% who strongly disapprove."
