We have a cat that knows when it has been naughty. IT opens doors (knob doors, sliding doors, doors with latches- it's a very smart cat)- and when it is somewhere it is not supposed to be, and you catch it, it goes all twitichy skinned, because it KNOWS it is now going outside- so it is definitely imagining the next few minutes of being hauled through the house and put out the back door. I think it looks guilty too, but it could just be an "oh crap I've been caught" look- which is hard to tell from guilty.

Actually you're right about dogs -- they do have pretty good emotional intelligence when it comes to sussing out the consequences for stealing food and making messes. But they do it anyway!
