"Bush Losing His Base The latest Diageo/Hotline poll reveals some severe cracks in the Republican base. Key findings: * The poll finds 60% of voters think the nation is on the wrong track with 41% of Republicans in agreement. The GOP number is up from 29% last month. * Republicans "strongly" approving of Bush has dropped to 37%, "the lowest since this poll began." * Of those who disapprove of Bush, Democrats and Republicans agree Iraq is the main reason. * Bush's approval is threatening incumbents in 2006 with 26% of Republicans now saying they want to switch their representative; up from just 10% last month. It's no wonder a joint DSCC/DCCC report says the Republican controlled congress blindly follows Bush's lead. "A startling 91% of Senate Republicans, 80% of House Republicans voted in sync with Bush White House in 2004." Murtha Calls for Immediate Withdrawl from Iraq "Signaling heightened opposition to the war in Iraq from a corner of long-standing support for the military, Rep. John Murtha, a conservative Pennsylvania Democrat, said today the United States should immediately begin to bring its troops home," the Los Angeles Times reports. Read Murtha's statement. It's very powerful stuff. Hotline On Call: "Murtha's move today makes it much easier for a lot of moderate or conservative Dems to reevaluate their own support for the war going into '06." Roll Call: "Murtha’s reversal on the war sent shockwaves through the Democratic Caucus and the halls of Congress given that he is a moderate and a hawk on military matters who had supported U.S. involvement in Iraq. " Rod Dreher: "If tough, non-effete guys like Murtha are willing to go this far, and can make the case in ways that Red America can relate to -- and listening to him talk was like listening to my dad, who's about the same age, and his hunting buddies -- then the president is in big trouble. I'm sure there's going to be an anti-Murtha pile-on in the conservative blogosphere, but from where I sit, conservatives would be fools not to take this man seriously." One More Poll Shows Bush Down The first measure of President Bush’s job approval "after his combative Veteran’s Day Speech that accused Democrats of re-writing the history of the Iraq War shows no immediate rebound for the President," according to the latest 50 state Survey USA poll. Nationwide, Bush’s approval is 37%, down from 38% one month ago. His approval rate is above 50% in just 4 states and below 50% in 46 states."
