For fire resistance steel is much better than wood.

BS. I'm an engineer. I've built several buildings which I designed myself using both large structural steel and large timbers. Steel weakens very rapidly with temperature, even at only 3-400 degrees above ambient. Wood beams can actually be on fire (well over 1000 degrees on the surface), but they have much lower conductivity, hence the wood only an inch inside the timber still retains most of its strength. Large structural timber can have excellent fire ratings, while steel has poor fire ratings. Ever notice exposed steel beams with sprayed on insulation? That insulation is for fire rating.
