I don't know where you are from, John, but I grew up in Texas where it's easy to understand Bush's appeal to his base. His personal style and his ideas resonated with the people disposed to vote for him in the first place, and he added the security dimension to bring over enough moderates to squeak by in two elections.

But he never won by large margins, and his poll ratings couldn't sustain the post-9/11 surge. I agree with you completely about how I perceive his personal style.

I don't think the surname had much to do with it. Being a conservative Texas governor, cutting taxes and making people feel like America was more assertive were the buttons to push, IMHO.

And he had Rove to help push them very skillfully. Unfortunately for him, those buttons are broken now and he doesn't have any other ideas or directions to turn to.

He usually comes over as snotty and petulant and has to be the most hopelessly inarticulate president in living memory.

Different people respond differently. It was true of Clinton and it is true of Bush. There are some people who warm up to each, who identify with each, who respond to each. And for each there are others who have a visceral negative reaction.

how does that account for Bush? He is terrible on TV or really in any public setting where he is not tightly scripted.

Bush is always tightly scripted.
Even if he makes an off-the-cuff remark he is scripted after the fact. The media is instructed (by their conservative owners) to describe any gaff as "refreshing" or "plain-spoken" or some other adjective besides "stupid" which is what the remarks usually are.
