Fatwa monopoly in Saudi Arabia must end intellectuals

By Mariam Al Hakeem, Correspondent

Riyadh: Saudi intellectuals have called for an end to the monopoly of Islamic propagation and held the religious curricula responsible for the struggle and hatred against the "others".

The intellectuals who were speaking at a preparatory workshop for the 5th National Dialogue Forum on Wednesday did not agree on a unified definition on what they meant by "others". But some said it means non-Muslims.

Scary stuff. This country seems as strange as North Korea.

Mohammad Bin Nasser Al Asmari, a Saudi writer and journalist, referring to the history textbook of secondary school, said the curricula are responsible for implanting hatred in the hearts of young people.

Some made a link between the terrorist attacks against the US on September 11, 2001, and some articles by Saudi writers instigating the perpetrators to commit these attacks.
