Once the US has pared down its presence in Iraq, it will vanish from the US headlines for the most part. As someone said to me last night about foreign aid programs in backward countries, either you succeed in your goals and then go home or you admit failure and eventually go home.

I suspect we will claim victory of a sort and then hunker down in desert bases while the Iraqis do what they are going to do with their new-found freedom to run amok.

And we will have a long pissing match about whether we won in Iraq or not, on top of the should-we-have-invaded-at-all argument now.
