The other side said we shouldn't go in because we are evil imperialist baby killers. I remember a lot of that. But I also remember a lot of concern about the implications of another abandonment as part of the general argument that we are not evil imperialist baby killers so much as monumental screw-ups. There was a lot of concern about a repeat of Vietnam from those reluctant to go into Iraq. You might not have been listening to the nuance of those who opposed the war as closely as I was.
