I know very little about Central Valley. I'd think that there is a massive speculation in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. This is where most of new come construction in So Cal.

The Central Valley, where I was born (Exeter) has great and varied job opportunities. You can pick oranges. Or peaches. Or watermelons. Or cotton. Or cut grapes. Or pick prunes (native Californians are commonly referred to as "prune pickers"). Now, you won't make enough to pay for a house, but you'll have a job. <G>

BTW, picking peaches is the worst. They itch. You wear these gloves that go to your elbow, but they still itch.

Cotton picking is hard work.

Cutting grapes isn't so bad, except that grape vines are full of hornets.

If you want to convince a kid he needs to go to college, let him take one of those jobs for a few months. <G>
