Under the terms of the agreement, unanimously approved by both Boards of Directors, Compaq shareowners will receive 0.6325 of a newly issued HP share for each share of Compaq, giving the merger a current value of approximately $25 billion. HP shareowners will own approximately 64% and Compaq shareowners 36% of the merged company.

Some reasons:

First, a lot of HP people only post because they own hp stock by virtue of being an ex-employee.

Second, the CPQ people were not especially happy with the merger.

Third, the dot com bomb in general blew out a lot or regular people and lost them a lot of money, which perforce made them less desirous of posting anywhere.

As CPQ/HP crawls back, more posters will be attracted.
