The vote was so lopsided because it was a Republican stunt that the Democrats weren't going to dignify with an honest vote.

Indeed. The Republican proposal was a stark straw man, the other half of a false dichotomy. I'm curious why three voted for it. Haven't had a chance to research that yet.

I thought the stunt was great theatre but entirely nonconstructive. I would like to see some debate on Murtha's proposal.

It seems like a key question is whether or not the presence of troops makes things better or worse, as we discussed here yesterday. I'd like to see some serious dialog on that, not stunts, however entertaining.

The issue is to important to consign to political theater and cheap tricks.

Agreed, but it applies to both sides of the divide.

The Dems are guity of much more nefarious cheap tricks than the GOP on this issue or did you not catch the closed Senate session and the lyin' crap about made up intelligence?

The issue is being sorted out and I think the Dems are going to suffer for once again going over the top. The election of Howard Dean as their leader says it all.

But as you say, we'll see.

I personally think the Dems are in for a big surprise. The GOP is playing masterful rope-a-dope and the Dems are too intoxicated with theater and the short term to realize it is happening. They seem to know nothing about that exquisite political art which the GOP under Rove has mastered: the importance of timing.

"Timely withdrawal" -- well, it seems like Ionesco expressed what pretty much most people think. We can't just dump them -- we have to help them get to a good place first.
