It may be that most of the actual fighting Military folks had their S*it together....But then in so many ways, I think that most of the civilians did as well. I am old enough to remember sitting in front of the radio on Saturday night with my folks and hearing the latest war news from the front. My dad was 4F'd because a heart condition, and he was more than disappointed not to be able to go, so he got a job at Remington Arms and worked two, sometimes 3 shifts in a row to make ammo for the Military. Mom held the family together, as all he could do was work and catch a bit of sleep. He did stay with the family on those Saturday nights, I remember that. They were ages 31 and 23 at the time (1941) with a very young family.

They were not unique. There probably were some draft dodgers then. There always have been cowards throughout history. My family viewed those dodgers that way. The only ones they had any use for were the Quakers, and there were a couple of Quakers in the family. They volunteered for medical duty to help the war effort where they could.

Now, the people that dodge, by and large just dodge, and think that someone else will pick up the slack, while they continue on happily ignoring their duty as citizens....
