I'm sorry for your friend's loss, but his son's action was a gross safety violation.

1. All guns are always loaded.

2. Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to destroy. Refer to #1.

My daughter corresponded with a Hollywood upstart back in the 80s. Later she found out he died. On the set, he pointed a pistol loaded with theatrical blanks at his head and fired it. He was just as dead as if there had been a bullet.

Many newer pistols will not fire without a magazine in place. This makes no difference in the handling of them, because: ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED.

Majority of accidental shootings happen with an unloaded gun which brings us back to basic gun safety, never point your gun at something you don't intend to shoot.

That's what happens when you don't teach your kids sufficiently about gun safety. Nobody with a proper respect for a firearm would do something like that.
