Lizzie,

Just the fact that BIDU exists means that the U.S. does not have to be the go-to place for new tech. Ten years ago, it would have been impossible for BIDU to exist.

Think of the startups that were spawned from Intel, Cisco, Msft, etc. If more of those engineers are hired offshore, the probability of startups in SV goes down. I'm not talking about companies like facebook.com which drag down productivity, think of Adobe (digital), 3Com, Xilinx, PA semiconductor, etc. In fact, Nvidia was formed by a former Sun employee who was from China! Nvidia now employs over 2000 people.

Color me extremely concerned. We better get a lot more serious about our educational system.

BTW, my dad worked for IBM his whole life. IBM treated its employees very well. In the 80's they were getting demolished on all sides. They had to take drastic measures. The packages they handed out were generous at the time. They would be called chumps for giving out that kind of dough today.
