America's actions during WWII in the eyes of most Western Europeans and quite a few Asians provided moral authority that had very little to do with military superiority.

Right, we have been an example... unfortunately we somewhere along the (govt policy) way got the notion that we should assert our way on others... that we actually HAD moral authority. This has been going on for decades. This is probably an extension of our very {puritanical) roots... nothing new, just being expressed in a new venue unfortunately.
