BOISE, Idaho (Dow Jones)--Micron Technology Inc. (MU) and Intel Corp. (INTC) agreed to form a new company that will produce NAND flash memory for use in consumer electronics, removable storage and handheld communications devices.

In a press release Monday, Micron and Intel said they initially will contribute about $1.2 billion each in cash, notes and assets to the new company called IM Flash Technologies LLC.

Subject to the closing of this venture, companies each agreed to supply Apple Computer Inc. (AAPL) with their portion of IM Flash Technologies' NAND flash memory output. Apple agreed to prepay $250 million each to Micron and Intel, as part of a supply plan for flash memory components through 2010.

In a separate press release, Apple said it intends to prepay a total of $1.2 billion during the next three months for supply agreements with several companies, including Hynix Semiconductor Inc., Samsung Electronics Co.
