"Hmmmm........a change in strategy. I think I like the other way better." The smearing wasn't going well, there aren't many other options available. So, now debate is legitimate, but they won't really debate in reality. They'd lose, if only because too many people don't trust them. Look at it this way, this is yet another sign they are sliding uncontrollably downhill. They've finally realized they are losing, but don't have any clues on how to reverse things.
