The question is: how can all the "ruffians" get ahead?

The answer is they can not.
Some might be able to do so via education, others will do it by being the boss's son, and others will do it by being in the right place at the right time.

Relatively few will do it by education IMO.
Most that try will take the wrong courses or give up, or perhaps even take the right courses but it will not matter as there is just too much competition or the boss's son beats them out.

I am not saying the solution is to be uneducated, because clearly the educated have SOME advantage SOME of the time.

What I am suggesting is that the so called solution to everyone's woes that does not have a job most assuredly is not some degree from COCO or CECO.

We are in a period of time where if you are a boomer or even close, it may just not matter. If you have a job and skills and are employed or in a career that is in demand then great. Without experience as a boomer, it is most likely just too FN late, regardless of how many courses one takes.

"...People with lower status get frustrated..."
Interesting comment.

The Hindu religion has this all worked out. If you live a pure life, you come back with higher status. One of my friends is brahmin and I asked her what she had to aim for in this life. It turns out that if she does well, she comes back as a brahmin male, the highest status critter around. <VBG> I don't quite see how Indira Ghandi fits in this situation, but religions are more complex than my mind and politics are even more complex than religion.
