I will give away the secret. :)
People are always so impressed when you use accents.
All the accented vowels (and a lot of other symbols) can be found on the numeric side of your keyboard. Hold alt down and type the number. Here's a partial list of accents- there are complete lists online though some seem to be different from these. (Maybe Thomas knows why).
I use the French é and è enough to have them memorized. The others I have to look up.

You can switch to a different language from the control panel or the taskbar, paste text with special characters from another source, or pick special characters out of the character map which is under programs/accessories.
