Whether you're part of the "mainstream" is questionable. I don't look at myself as part of the mainstream so I don't consider that unamerican by any stretch. If everyone where part of the mainstream nothing would ever progress in this country. You might also say, and "works within the laws of the United States". Other than that, I agree with you.
