The PM's assumption is the evidence.
You can question it if you like, but it still is evidence. When coupled with other evidence, it might look even stronger.


Assumptions need to be backed up by solid evidence. When one considers that Iraq didn't need Nigerian yellowcake, and that documents alleging a deal were proven false, the "evidence" looks weaker - not stronger.

Keep in mind that the Nigerian might have been looking to curry favor with the United States by suggesting that Iraq was looking to buy yellowcake but Nigeria would not be a party to such illegal acts...

Much of the prewar "intelligence" that was ultimately proven false came from Iraqi nationals who were looking for visas or other favors from the US - and were willing to give the US "intelligence" the it wanted - even if they had to make it up.
