"That was one of the more interesting developments of the last few days. What do you think of Sharon's latest?"

The mideast is changing but in unexpected ways. Shiaa, Sunni, Kurds may be able to overcome the terrorists on their own if the US gets out of the way. Wouldnt it be ironic if a federal, somewhat democratic iraq occurred because of a shared desire to get the US out of the country. We should take whats given and declare it a win. In many ways it actually would be. No more saddam and a unified iraq. It is a dream now but one we should cooperate with.

As for Sharon, it was clear to me that he would do this once Peretz pulled out of the coalition. Good riddance ot Likud and hopefully the pro business folks can be coopted by Sharon. I think Peres will join him and is still destined to play a major role even at his advanced age. The ultimate inter israeli battle will be between those who think they can disengage from the Palestinians unilaterally like sharon (or like the old sharon) and those who see a need for a negotiated settlement like Peres. Peres is the only Israeli leader presently who has the confidence of the Palestinians. If both sharon and peres and abbas for that matter live long enough, we may just get this problem resolved. Like with my iraq comments this is dreamy stuff currently, nothing certain, just an eternal optimists hope. mike

PS 33% chance on both but both have been rising.
